The museum is situated amidst the Naulatanni estate and is the first museum of its kind in India. The displays in the interior depict the origin and growth of a 100 year old tea plantation industry, beginning with a rudimentary tea roller to the entirely automated tea factory at Mattupetty.
A granite sundial at the entrance of the museum was crafted by the Art Industrial School at Nazareth in 1913. Several historical artifacts are displayed at the museum – an original tea roller from 195, a Pelton Wheel used to generate power in the 1920’s, a Rotorvane (an ancient CTC tea processing machine) are displayed in the museum. Another exhibit that may be of interest to guests is a rail engine wheel unit from the Kundale Valley Light Railway from the colonial era, operating between Munnar and Top Station.
Aramya is the bakery and confectionary unit of Srishti managed and run by speech impaired and otherwise physically disadvantaged people who have a learnt their skills at a five star hotel. This deli is one of its kind in the region and uses the state of the art machinery and best quality ingredients. They also run a retail outlet in Munnar town.
Athulya is a part of Tata Global Beverages’ corporate social responsibility initiatives and works with the differently abled and mentally challenged individuals. They create stationery from hand-made paper. Established on the back of a simple premise – wealth from waste, they decided to recycle waste paper, cut boards and other stationery waste from all the estate offices. They then went on to use natural additives found around Munnar like tea and eucalyptus leaves, lemon grass, pineapple leaves, onion peels, flower petals, elephant droppings and water hyacinth.
The CSI Christ Church built in 1910 is a landmark and a destination that is popular with visitors to Munnar. A Protestant church, it is built mostly of stone by Scottish tea estate managers and workers. The main attraction of this church is its charming interior which still retains stained- glass windows, brass plaques, rows of rosewood pews and an ornate chandelier. A cemetery adjacent to the church dates back to 1894.
Established in 1898, the Mount Carmel Church is one of Munnar’s important places of religious worship. Considered the first Catholic Church in the region, it was built by a Spanish missionary whose body is buried in the church. The serene interior of the church contains exquisite statues of Jesus Christ and Mother Mary.
